new mp3

Here's the new shorter version with the suggested changes.  I think it could still use some tweaking especially near the middle of the middle section, but we're close.

Oh.  and I was wondering if you had any additional title ideas.  I like stripper insect, but perhaps we should go with something a little less visually descriptive.  I don't have any other ideas at the moment, but I'll let you know if I come up with something.

stuff for Thursday

The beginning- I would like to somehow cut from 00:53 directly to 1:20, taking out the loops in between those times. (The times are rough, but it's just to give you an idea of the place in the music)

The middle- Could there be about a minute removed from the progression somewhere between 3:25 and the shift at 5:42?

The end- Making it 35 sec or so with the final sound being something that gets progressively stronger so that its a prominent last voice at the end

specific ideas (filters, form, etc.)

A lot of this may not really make sense to you, but much of these notes are simply a way for me to jot down specific effect and filtering ideas for my own benefit.
-----
Intro: 0:00 - 01:25

We should record heels on various surfaces with binaural mics to give the impression that the perspective is that of the stripper.  (gravel, concrete, pavement, wood, tile)  Steps alone open the piece indicating a walk from her car across sidewalks/pavement and into the club (door1) and into a dressing room (door2).

Doors as significant transitions:
Door2 should demarcate the transition to the other world.  Door should be of heavy composite metal with spring loaded bar latch.  when the door slams instigate a comb filter to signify new space/soundworld.

-----
Cosmic: 01:25 - 05:00

Club beat should be filtered according to listener's perspective.  Beat continues into the cosmic section, but with a limited lowpass/bandpass filter (low Q) and some comb filtering as well.  (links cosmic section with the intro)  Beat filter attenuation grows very slowly until only the bass drum can be heard.

Another copy of the beat material will be subjected to the buffer shuffler in coordination with new cosmic material.  (crossfade)

bandpass filter gradually applied to cosmic material just before the crouch then opened up (wah) at the crouch to heighten sense of dramatic reveal.
-----
Crackle:  05:00 - 06:45

At 5min. dry out insect sounds (ant hill most prevalent) Apply highpass filter to cosmic material so that it seems to ascend out of sight.

insect sounds

Here are some interesting insect sounds that might work as a component of the piece.  I recorded some of them and some I found online...

This one is my favorite.  I recorded it with a contact mic in a very busy ant hill.

Here are a few more with cicadas, wasps, mosquitos and bees.

Perhaps using some actual insect sounds (both electronically processed and raw) may work well.

Form

Here's some form things that might help us shape this:

I'm thinking the piece should be 7 or so minutes.

The first 5.5 min or so I'll be on the ground, slowly shifting, splayed, contracting/expanding, muscles gripping and releasing.  Very insect like/woman's body on the ground-like.  I'll be sort of zig zagging my way downstage.  Sound here could be also be slowly shifting.

Then, a shift!  Something dramatic.  I'll be down stage center, very close to audience.  For the first time I'll get my feet (heels) under me in a crouch.  Lots of quick, tiny gestures, I'll eventually come to full standing.  I think the lights will fade with me standing.

So the bulk of the piece I'm horizontal, mobile, and slow then at the end I'm vertical, stationary, and fast.

Stripclub beat/vibe meshed with insect-esque sounds...hmmm.

Just some stuff to chew on...miss you buddy :)
